What is the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery?

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be exploring the different boards and organizations that certify doctors to provide the services and therapies that help you heal and recover. This week, we discuss the ABOS.

The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery was founded in 1934 to ensure the highest quality of training and standards for orthopaedic surgeons. It is a private, non-profit, and independent board that serves to help patients and physicians. This comes in the form of certifications, formal standards, and outlining the requirements to be considered an orthopaedic surgeon. This is carried out in the name of providing patients with respectful, professional, and compassionate care and outcomes. An ABOS certification sets a surgeon apart from the others by demonstrating the commitment to furthering one’s knowledge and experience, as well as going above and beyond to provide for the patient.

Dr. Kevin Darr was first certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1996. He has recertified his qualifications with the board every ten years since then, ensuring that he keeps up to date with the latest in orthopaedic surgery practices and science in order to help patients achieve the best possible healthcare results.

Because Dr. Darr sees many patients with sports injuries, he received a subspecialty certification by the ABOS for Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, which demonstrates his knowledge and skill in treating patients with conditions that are more commonly associated with sports injuries. This requires an additional examination that is designed to evaluate the physician’s knowledge in sports medicine, which can come from training specific to sports injuries or a greater volume of cases related to sports medicine. He is recertified every ten years along with his ABOS certification in order to keep his knowledge and skills consistent and up to date.
