Over the next few weeks, we’ll be exploring the different boards and organizations that certify doctors to provide the services and therapies that help you heal and recover. This week, we’ll look at the AAOS.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons was founded in 1933 to educate physicians in the field of orthopaedics. There are courses for physicians, scientific publications, and regularly-held meetings that are all aimed to promote a high level of education, understanding, and quality in orthopaedic care.
One of the AAOS’s methods of ensuring a high quality of safe care is with fellowships, which allow physicians to take part in post-graduate training. This allows them to enjoy a formal recognition of their skill. Fellowships last a minimum of six months to a year and require a deep commitment and focus that translates into quality health care practices upon completion. The patient and the surgeon both benefit from this intensive training in the end.
Dr. Kevin Darr was elected to the fellowship of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in 1998. In addition to his fellowship, Dr. Darr keeps up with the latest in musculoskeletal care practices through his regular recertifications and his memberships in orthopaedic associations and academies including the AAOS, among many others.
